The United Nations Population Fund is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.
UNFPA supports the collection, analysis and use of the most accurate population data to ensure that everyone, everywhere, is counted, and accounted for, in the pursuit of sustainable development.
Among other activities, we support countries to implement population and housing censuses, and to strengthen their civil registration and vital statistics systems to generate population data essential for access to family planning and other sexual and reproductive health services, and to prevent and eliminate gender-based violence.
We also strengthen national capacity in data disaggregation, analysis, dissemination and utilization, to ensure targeted service delivery, including in humanitarian settings. Throughout all of our activities, we work to ensure universal availability and analysis of geo-referenced and disaggregated data.
We believe that data are key to achieving UNFPA’s transformative goals of ending preventable maternal deaths, unmet need for family planning, and gender-based violence. Furthermore, we are convinced that data will pave the way to fulfilling the promise of the ICPD Programme of Action and realizing the Sustainable Development Goals.
